Unlike traditional kiln firing, Raku is a distinctive technique performed outdoors using a gas kiln including pulling red hot ceramic ware out of a kiln and placing the ware into a container with combustible materials. During this two-step workshop, students will discuss the process and create their clay pieces on day one and then fire on day two. Students may make and fire up to 3 pieces. Some clay experience is required.

We will use simple hand-building techniques, including texturing and folding, to make these decorative and functional vessels. No experience is needed; all levels are welcome. Offering this 10 week class in our ceramics studios! Beginning students will be taught the basics of hand-building and wheel-work while intermediate students will refine their skills. Individual projects will include functional pottery and decorative work. Discover the ceramic process from start to finish, learn glazing techniques, watch demonstrations, and receive one-on-one attention with instructor help and feedback. Taken the class before? Bill works with each individual student to see them grow, sign up for multiple classes!
Offering this 10 week class in our ceramics studios! This class is available for advanced students that have taken at least four ceramics classes at CMA or have received instructor approval to take the class. Form, surface design, glazing, and firing will be explored in greater depth during this class. Advanced students who have taken five or more CMA ceramics classes or working at a level determined to be advanced by the instructor will be required to do their own firing in cooperation with the Canton Ceramic Artists Guild to deepen their understanding of the process.
