Clay Fundamentals with Susan Mentrak

Learn the fundamentals of working with clay from start to finish through instructor-led demonstrations and basic glazing techniques. Beginner students will focus on 4 weeks of essentials, including hand-building techniques like pinching, coiling, and slab. These introductory weeks will be followed by individualized projects with one-on-one instructor attention and feedback, as students explore the basics of functional pottery and decorative pieces. This class is a precursor to learning how to do wheel throwing at a later stage.

Throughout the workshop, you'll gain practical experience in various surface design techniques, learning how to add intricate patterns and tactile qualities to your work. Students will also experiment with glazing and colored slip to explore their impact on fired ceramic pieces, adding detailed illustrations and expressive colors. No prior experience with clay is necessary—just an eagerness to learn and create! All materials provided, all skill levels are welcome.

Spirit Animal Mixed Media Workshop with Toni Billick

Join us for a transformative workshop where students will create a unique artwork inspired by their spirit animal. Spirit animals serve as powerful guides on our inner journeys and often reflect key aspects of our personalities. This class teaches collage and assemblage techniques and also focuses on basic drawing. Students are encouraged to bring photos of beloved animals or personal objects that remind them of an animal they love/have loved to incorporate into their mixed media composition.

Learn the Impressionist Realism painting style with instructor Lin Luciano Fiore. Create your own composition using vivid colors, rich value contrasts, and streaks of light often applied with a palette knife. Your work will be inspired by artists like William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, and John Singer Sargent as you focus on subjects such as windswept trees and clouds, rugged hills and gentle streams. All painting tools and mediums provided. This class is designed for the Intermediate student.

Classic Glass Fusing with Amy Pepperney

Designed for advanced students looking to expand their knowledge and skills in raku firing, this workshop is an intensive, two-day experience focused on advanced glazing and firing techniques. Participants should come prepared with 4-5 bisque-fired pieces ready for glazing.

Independent Study with Sarah DeBaun (Fall 2025)

Advanced ceramics students are eligible for independent study at CMA. This option is available for a limited number of students who have taken at least three ceramics classes at CMA. Tuition fee provides access to the studio during open studio hours, a locker for storage, access to studio tools and equipment, and a professional teaching artist mentor who is available during set times. Studio hours run concurrently with the Museum’s open hours and the seasonal  ceramics class schedule.
