Instructor: Laura Kolinski-Schultz

Offering this 10 week class in our ceramics studios! Beginning students will be taught the basics of hand-building and wheel-work while intermediate students will refine their skills. Individual projects will include functional pottery and decorative work. Discover the ceramic process from start to finish, learn glazing techniques, watch demonstrations and, receive one-on-one attention with instructor help and feedback. Taken the class before? Laura works with each individual student to see them grow, sign up for multiple classes!

Additional costs, not included with class cost:
*All CMA ceramics students are required to purchase their clay from the CMA; the cost is $45.00 for 25 pounds of clay and includes cost of glazes and firing.
*Students are capped at 50 lbs. of clay per session. As an educational ceramics studio maintained by our Canton Ceramics Artists Guild volunteers who fire students' work, we are unable to accommodate production potters.
*Students may also purchase a clay tool kit ($15.00) from the CMA.
*Both clay and tool kits can be purchased during the first day of class and throughout the session as needed.

Although admission is FREE every Thursday from 10 am-8 pm, courtesy of PNC Foundation, we now offer FREE experiential drop-in art-making events on select Thursday nights this winter. Bring yourself, your family, friends, "girls night out," whatever combination you wish ... all are welcome to join us for the relaxation and fun of creative expression and discovering your inner artist.

Each Thursday night features different themes inspired by the current exhibitions and the Museum's Collection of American art. No registration necessary, led by a CMA instructor — all supplies (and inspiration) provided. Just drop in and spark your creativity ...

Visual literacy begins with a love for pictures and storytelling. This series combines the best (and often obscure) picture book artists, storytelling in the Museum’s galleries, and art-making in the studio into one, fun adventure. Learn about color mixing from Hervé Tullet, shape-changing from Eric Carle, mice who enjoy messes from Leo Lionni, and a range of emotions from Molly Bang and Patricia Polacco to name just a few. Bring your favorite stuffy friend to accompany you on your adventure.

Instructor: Bill Shearrow

Form, surface design, glazing, and firing are explored in greater depth during this class. Designed for advanced students, with a prerequisite of four ceramics classes completed at CMA, or instructor approval. Students who have taken five or more CMA ceramics classes, or individuals deemed to be working at an apprentice level are required to complete their own firing in cooperation with the Canton Ceramic Artists Guild to deepen their understanding of the process.
