COMMUNITY ART PROJECT: SUBMIT YOUR STORY!

Yuyi Morales (Artist/Author/Illustrator) Migrantes, you and I. 2018 Mixed media digital Illustration for Dreamers (New York: Neal Porter Books, Holiday House Publishing, Inc.) 2018 Collection of the artist

Begins 12/31/1969, Ends 12/31/1969

1 , 07:00 PM-07:00 PM

The Canton Museum of Art invites you to share your stories that matter by being part of a community art project created by and for families living in Stark County. Through expressive writing, drawing, and photos, tell us about what “finding home” means to you.

Inspired by the words and illustrations of artist Yuyi Morales, "You are what you bring with you..."
is a collaborative school and community art project designed to celebrate our individual journeys of finding a place we call "home" and the rich cultural heritage and traditions brought by immigrants and refugees to the United States.

Yuyi Morales is one of the featured artists and book authors in CMA’s upcoming art exhibition, "Finding Home: Four Artists' Journeys," showcasing visual memoirs exploring immigration, cultural heritage, and personal journeys. The exhibition features the work of master illustrators that bring the immigration experience to life, giving voice to the emotional complexities of traveling to America and adapting to a new world.

OVERVIEW OF FINDING HOME EXHIBITION AT CMA [May 2-July 23]

More than one hundred-fifty original drawings, paintings, linoleum block prints, and digital mixed media works by artists Frances Jetter, David Macaulay, James McMullan, and Yuyi Morales draw upon memories and family narratives, and on historical research that establishes meaningful contexts for their work. Personal mementos⸺from treasured toys, skates, and tea sets to articles of clothing, books, photographs, and travel documents, as well as video commentary, will illuminate each illustrator’s story.

A COMMUNITY ART PROJECT FOR ALL

Students and adults from Stark County and the surrounding areas are encouraged to participate which will include a free education guide, submission worksheet, a community art installation at the Canton Museum of Art, and a chance to win a backpack full of art supplies and writing materials to take with you on your future journeys!

THE ART PROJECT:

What personal items or memories did you or would you bring with you on your journey to find home? We have created a companion video from the artist, Yuyi Morales, talking about her immigration journey, a book reading, an education guide, and a submission worksheet that delves into this big question and gives more insight into the project. This packet contains a simple two-part worksheet for you to fill out. One part is a space to draw your story; this can be through drawings, paintings, and even photography. The second part is to write about your drawing. The only limit is the size of the submission and your imagination!

TO PARTICIPATE:

Submissions will be accepted from May 2- July 19, 2023.
Individuals are encouraged to deliver, mail, or email your submission directly to the Museum:
