AVATARS: Relics from the Future - Opening Reception
May 3 2017 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm
The new awe-inspiring exhibition at Canton Museum of Art takes audiences on an artistic excavation of mighty entities such as mummies and totems extracted from the innovative ceramic studio of Gary Spinosa. “Avatars: Relics from the Future” combines human, animal, and architectural forms, as the artist seeks to materialize spiritual energy through his sincerely benevolent figures. For Spinosa, animals contain the keys to universal language that bonds humanity at its most primal level. These sculptures, from towering grand constructions to diminutive “stones,” are imbued with deep sanctity and stillness, a sometimes-disquieting mystery, myth, and perhaps even superstition. Free public reception - no RSVP required.
