Pottery Classes for Adults

 

A Note About Materials:
Beginning students may purchase a pottery tool kit from the CMA for the first day of class. (Cost: $22.50, includes 8 tools and tax.) 
All CMA pottery students are required to purchase their clay from the CMA. (Cost: $37.00 for 25 lbs of clay, includes glazing/firing fees, and tax.)

A-300 Beginning/Intermediate Pottery

10 Saturdays 12:30 – 2:30 pm, Room 104, Instructor: Laura Kolinski-Schultz
Begins 9/11, Ends 12/11 (No class 10/16, 11/13, 11/20, and 11/27.)
Beginning students will be taught the basics of hand-building and wheel-work while intermediate students will refine their skills. Individual projects will include functional and decorative work. Glazing techniques will be taught, finished ware will be discussed, and demonstrations will be given.
Cost: $105

A-310 Beginning/Intermediate Pottery

12 Wednesdays 6:30 – 8:30 pm, Room 104, Instructor: Bill Shearrow
Begins 9/8, Ends 12/15 (No class 11/10, 11/17, and 11/24)
Beginning students will be taught the basics of hand-building and wheel-work while intermediate students will refine their skills. Individual projects will include functional and decorative work. Glazing techniques will be taught, finished ware will be discussed, and demonstrations will be given.

A-320 Hand Building

6 Wednesdays 1:30 – 3:30 pm, Room 104, Instructor: Laura Kolinkski-Schultz
Begins 9/8, Ends 10/13
Learn the versatility of pinch, coil, and soft slab techniques using high-fire stoneware clay. Class includes demonstrations of forming and decorating, discussions, and critiques of work. You will further develop your hand building skills regardless of your current level of experience. Create beautiful pieces without a wheel!
Cost: $70.


A-340 Press Molds for Pottery Making

6 Wednesdays 10:00 – 12:00 noon, Room 104, Instructor: Laura Kolinski-Schutlz
Begins 9/8, Ends 10/13
Create plaster press molds using simple equipement.  Learn how to calculate the correct amounts of water and plaster to create stronger molds and discover the mysterious magic of mold soap.  You can make tiles, dishes, bowls, feet, decorative elements and more with easy, re-useable press mold technology. Limit of 8 students.  You will need scrap clay, regular clay, plaster and basic pottery tools for this class.
Cost: $80.


A-350 Intermediate/Advanced Pottery

12 Tuesdays 6:30 – 8:30 pm, Room 104, Instructor: Bill Shearrow
Begins 9/7, Ends 12/14 (No class 11/9, 11/16, and 11/23.)
Students with a firm foundation in basic technical skills will enjoy this class. Special projects will be the key to this class. Form, surface design, glazing, and firing will be explored in greater depth. Advanced students (with five sessions or the equivalent, or working at a level determined to be advanced by the instructor) will be required to do their own firing in cooperation with the Potters' Guild in order to deepen their understanding of the total process.
Cost: $120.


A-370 Raku 1 Day Workshop

1 Saturday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, Room 104, Instructor: Bill Shearrow
Dates To Be Announced
You must be enrolled in a current CMA Pottery Class, at the Intermediate level or above. This workshop will focus on glazing and firing pots in the Japanese tradition of Raku. Each student may bring two medium-sized, bisqued, stoneware pots to fire. Check with your instructor on the stability of your pieces. Glazes and tools will be provided. You will be involved with each step of the process, including set-up and clean-up. Wear long pants and closed-toed shoes (no sandals, please). Bring your own drink for lunch and a covered dish to share. Limit of 8 students in each workshop.
Cost: $65.
