Celebrate the Artist of the Midwest

August 20 - November 1, 2009

This exhibit of 56 pieces from the CMA permanent collection, features 2 and 3-dimensional works from the Midwestern states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Lynnda Arrasmith, Canton Museum of Art curator and registrar, says, “I have often wondered which states are considered part of the Midwest - the heartland. Was it defined during the great depression, the agriculture or perhaps the industry or is it defined by the artists from this region? Celebrate the Artist of the Midwest is an attempt to understand the Midwest through works of some of its artists.”

Featured are paintings and works on paper by Gerrit Beneker, Thomas Hart Benton, Kenyon Cox, Adolf Dehn, Alice Schille and Clyde Singer. Three-dimensional pieces include works by Ken Ferguson, David Hostetler, Mark Soppeland and Mary Spain.
